“Small in size, rich in view.”
Tucked between Cliffside Park and North Bergen along the Hackensack River valley, Fairview is one of Bergen County's smallest and most densely settled boroughs. The Fairview Chapter champions the small businesses that line Anderson Avenue and give this tight-knit, multicultural community its everyday energy.
About the town
At well under a square mile, Fairview packs a dense, walkable grid of homes and storefronts into the slope between the Hudson County line and the Bergen ridge. It's a commuter's town at heart, with NJ Transit buses running straight into Midtown Manhattan.
Fairview is part of New Jersey’s Gold Coast, along the Hudson.
Our history
1894
Fairview was formed on December 19, 1894 from portions of Ridgefield Township — one of 26 Bergen County boroughs incorporated that year under a new state Borough Act.
Naming
The borough takes its name from its scenic outlook over the Hackensack River valley, a vantage point that gave the young town its identity from the start.
20th century
Through the 20th century Fairview grew into a dense residential borough for New York City commuters, its small-town blocks filling in with waves of new residents drawn by proximity to Manhattan.
Signature corridor
Anderson Avenue is Fairview's Main Street and the shared commercial spine it stitches together with neighboring Cliffside Park and Fort Lee. Its storefronts — family-run restaurants, grocers, and shops — reflect the borough's Hispanic, Korean, and Italian communities block by block.
Community & culture
Along Anderson Avenue, supermarkets and family kitchens serving Hispanic, Korean, and Italian traditions sit block by block — an everyday reflection of the borough's diversity.
Longstanding institutions like Saint John the Baptist Church and the Franciscan Community Development Center have anchored community services in Fairview for generations.
Fairview runs its own schools through 8th grade, after which its teens join neighboring Cliffside Park High School under a longtime sending/receiving relationship between the two towns.
