About the town
Founded as a resort by Colonel John Stevens in the early 1800s, Hoboken grew into a dense, walkable waterfront city shaped by shipping, rail, and generations of immigrants. Today it blends 19th-century brownstones with a modern skyline view of Manhattan.
Hoboken is part of New Jersey’s Gold Coast, along the Hudson.
Our history
1804
Colonel John Stevens, who bought the old Bayard farm at "Hoebuck" in 1784, laid out Hoboken's street grid in 1804 and began developing the waterfront as a resort for Manhattanites.
1846
On June 19, 1846, the New York Knickerbockers played the New York Nine at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken — recognized as the first fully documented, organized game of baseball.
1855
After forming as a township in 1849, Hoboken residents voted in 1855 to incorporate as a city, electing Cornelius V. Clickener as its first mayor.
Signature landmark
Built in 1907 in the Beaux-Arts style for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, Hoboken Terminal remains a working intermodal hub linking NJ Transit rail, PATH, light rail, and ferries — among the busiest rail stations in North America.
Community & culture
Hoboken's main commercial corridor runs sixteen blocks of historic storefronts, restaurants, and shops, recognized by the American Planning Association as one of America's "Great Streets."
Founded in 1870 atop Castle Point, it was the nation's first college dedicated to mechanical engineering and remains a cornerstone of the city's identity.
Waves of German, Irish, and Italian immigrants shaped Hoboken from the 19th century onward, leaving a legacy of churches, social clubs, and neighborhood traditions still visible today.
