Ridgefield — a hillside borough with a storied art colony

“Stand proud with Ridgefield.”

Tucked into the ridges above the Meadowlands, Ridgefield has grown from a scattering of 19th-century farms into one of Bergen County's most diverse boroughs. Its hills once hosted a pioneering art colony and today anchor a close-knit community shaped by generations of newcomers.

About the town

A borough built on ridges

Ridgefield rises across four distinct hillside sections between the Hackensack River and the Hudson Palisades, its terrain giving the borough its name. Just minutes from the George Washington Bridge corridor, it blends residential streets, retail, and light industry within under three square miles.

  • Hillside terrain divided into four historic sections: Ridgefield Proper, Morsemere Park, Ridgefield Heights, and The Valley
  • Served by US 1/9, US 46, and the New Jersey Turnpike, with NJ Transit buses to Manhattan
  • One of Bergen County's most diverse communities, with deep Korean American and Hispanic roots

Our history

The story of Ridgefield

1892

Borough incorporated

After a push by local business owners for independence from Ridgefield Township, voters approved separation and the Borough of Ridgefield was incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature on May 26, 1892.

1913

The Grantwood art colony

Painters Man Ray, Alfred Kreymborg, and Samuel Halpert founded the Grantwood artists' colony on a Ridgefield bluff — later home to the avant-garde "Others" group. Streets named Sketch Place, Studio Road, and Art Lane still mark the site.

1915

Duchamp arrives

Patron Walter Arensberg brought French artist Marcel Duchamp out to Ridgefield to meet Man Ray, sparking a lifelong friendship between two of modern art's most influential figures.

Signature landmark

The Grantwood art colony streets

Long before Ridgefield was a residential suburb, its wooded bluffs sheltered a colony of clapboard artist shacks where Man Ray painted and Marcel Duchamp found a second creative home. The colony is gone, but Sketch Place, Studio Road, and Art Lane still trace its footprint through town.

★ Founded in 1913 by Man Ray, Alfred Kreymborg, and Samuel Halpert.
